Your job is to turn that current into voltage without destroying bandwidth or adding ridiculous noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A simple resistor does the job in theory. In practice? The photodiode\u2019s junction capacitance (often 10\u201350 pF) teams up with the resistor to create a pole that kills your speed. Pick the Right Op-Amp (This Is 70% of Success)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Forget general-purpose op-amps. Calculate Feedback Resistor and Compensation Capacitor<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s the practical formula I use instead of the scary textbooks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cf \u2248 \u221a( (Cin \u00d7 4pF) \/ (2\u03c0 \u00d7 Rf \u00d7 GBW) )<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where Cin is total input capacitance (photodiode + op-amp + stray).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or if you want it even simpler \u2014 start with 0.5 pF and tweak on the bench. I usually end up between 0.3 pF and 2.2 pF in real designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Deal With the Photodiode Capacitance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where a lot of guys get stuck. Si PIN photodiodes from our <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/photo-detector.com\/product-category\/si-pin-photodiodes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Si PIN photodiodes category<\/a><\/strong> typically run 1.5\u201312 pF depending on active area and bias voltage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bigger area = more capacitance = harder to get high bandwidth. Sometimes it\u2019s worth using a smaller photodiode and adding an optical concentrator. Controversial opinion: many engineers oversize their photodiodes \u201cjust to be safe\u201d and end up with a slower, noisier <em>transimpedance amplifier for photodiodes<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.
