Most analog circuit engineers I talk to eventually hit the same wall: <strong>photodiode noise<\/strong> is eating their SNR for breakfast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After years of helping customers optimize detection circuits here at BeePhoton, I\u2019ve learned one thing above all\u2014understanding the difference between <strong>shot noise<\/strong> and <strong>thermal noise<\/strong> isn\u2019t just academic. It\u2019s the difference between a design that works in the lab and one that actually performs in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today I\u2019m going to walk you through exactly how these two dominant <strong>photodiode noise<\/strong> types behave, when each one takes over, and what you can actually do about it. No fluff, no perfect textbook answers\u2014just the stuff we\u2019ve learned the hard way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Photodiode Noise Matters More Than You Think<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s be honest. You didn\u2019t come here for theory. You\u2019re probably trying to squeeze a few more dB of SNR out of a lidar receiver, a medical sensor, or some industrial optical measurement system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every nanoamp of <strong>photodiode noise<\/strong> current directly limits your minimum detectable signal. And here\u2019s the part many engineers miss: the dominant <strong>photodiode noise<\/strong> source changes depending on your operating conditions. What works at high light levels falls apart at low light levels, and vice versa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/photo-detector.com\/product-category\/si-pin-photodiodes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Si PIN photodiodes<\/a><\/strong> regularly get used in applications where customers are chasing sub-picoamp noise floors. Getting there means you have to know your enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Main Types of Photodiode Noise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are four noise sources you\u2019ll usually wrestle with in a photodiode circuit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Shot noise (signal-dependent and dark-current-dependent)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thermal noise (from the load resistor and amplifier)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1\/f noise (mostly annoying at very low frequencies)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Generation-recombination noise (usually smaller in good silicon PINs)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For most broadband applications above a few kHz, the battle comes down to <strong>shot noise versus thermal noise<\/strong>. So let\u2019s dig into both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is Shot Noise in Photodiodes?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shot noise comes from the discrete nature of electrons. Light arrives as photons, electrons get generated randomly, and that randomness creates noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The formula for the RMS shot noise current is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>i_shot = sqrt(2 * q * (I_photo + I_dark) * BW)<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><code>q<\/code> = 1.6 \u00d7 10^-19 coulombs (electron charge)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><code>I_photo<\/code> = photocurrent in amperes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><code>I_dark<\/code> = dark current in amperes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><code>BW<\/code> = noise bandwidth in Hz<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice something important: shot noise increases with the square root of your signal current. This is why <strong>photodiode noise<\/strong> gets worse as your signal gets stronger\u2014until eventually shot noise dominates everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I remember one customer who kept increasing LED power thinking it would improve their SNR. They actually made it worse after a certain point because they pushed the system into shot-noise-limited territory while their amplifier was still contributing tons of thermal noise. It\u2019s always there, even in complete darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The RMS thermal noise current is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>i_thermal = sqrt(4 * k * T * BW \/ R_f)<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><code>k<\/code> = 1.38 \u00d7 10^-23 J\/K (Boltzmann\u2019s constant)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><code>T<\/code> = temperature in Kelvin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><code>R_f<\/code> = feedback resistance (or load resistance)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><code>BW<\/code> = bandwidth in Hz<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice that thermal noise goes <em>down<\/em> as you increase the resistance. This is why high transimpedance gains help so much at low light levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s something most application notes won\u2019t tell you: cooling the circuit helps way more than people expect. Every 25\u00b0C drop in temperature gives you about 0.5 dB improvement in thermal <strong>photodiode noise<\/strong>. We\u2019ve seen customers get almost 2 dB total SNR improvement just by adding a TEC to the photodiode and first-stage amplifier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shot Noise vs Thermal Noise: Head-to-Head Comparison<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let me give you some real numbers. By increasing the feedback resistor to 10 M\u03a9, thermal noise dropped dramatically and shot noise became dominant. Total <strong>photodiode noise<\/strong> improved by almost 5\u00d7 compared to the non-optimized high light case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This table gets shown to almost every customer who contacts us about SNR problems. The transition point between thermal and shot noise limited performance is usually the most important thing to find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Calculate Total Photodiode Noise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The total noise current isn\u2019t just shot plus thermal. Because they\u2019re uncorrelated, you add them in quadrature:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>i_total = sqrt(i_shot\u00b2 + i_thermal\u00b2 + i_amp\u00b2 + ...)<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I can\u2019t tell you how many times I\u2019ve seen engineers add the numbers linearly. Don\u2019t do that. Choose the Right Photodiode<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not all silicon PINs are created equal when it comes to <strong>photodiode noise<\/strong>. Lower dark current devices give you more headroom before shot noise takes over.
